eSIM FAQ — Everything You Need to Know

Got questions about eSIMs or SIMPal? Here are answers to the questions we get asked most.

General eSIM Questions

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card built directly into your device. Instead of inserting a plastic card, you download a carrier profile via QR code and activate it instantly. No hardware, no waiting for delivery.

Which devices support eSIM?

Most modern smartphones released after 2018 support eSIM:

  • iPhone: XS and later (iPhone 14+ in the US are eSIM-only)
  • Samsung Galaxy: S20 and later, Z Fold/Flip series
  • Google Pixel: Pixel 3 and later
  • Others: Many Motorola, Sony, and OnePlus devices

Your device must also be unlocked — carrier-locked phones may have eSIM disabled even if the hardware supports it.

Can I use two SIMs at the same time?

Yes. Most eSIM-capable devices support Dual SIM — one physical SIM and one eSIM active simultaneously. Keep your home number for calls while using a local eSIM for data abroad.

How many eSIM profiles can I store?

Devices typically store 5–20 eSIM profiles, but only 1–2 can be active at a time. You can switch between stored profiles in Settings without re-downloading them — useful if you travel to the same destinations repeatedly.

Does an eSIM work without Wi-Fi?

You need an internet connection to initially download the eSIM profile. Once activated, it works like any SIM — no internet required to use it.

Is my eSIM transferable to another device?

Generally no. eSIM profiles are device-specific. If you upgrade phones, you'll need a new plan for the new device. Keep your order confirmation emails — some providers allow re-download within a time window.

What happens if I factory reset my phone?

All eSIM profiles are erased. Back up your QR codes or confirmation emails before resetting, as some providers issue single-use codes.

SIMPal Specific

What countries does SIMPal cover?

SIMPal offers local eSIM plans in over 200 countries and regions, working directly with local network partners for genuine local rates.

How long are SIMPal plans valid?

Plans range from 1 to 30 days — match it to your trip, no unused days wasted.

Do plans include calls and SMS?

It depends on the destination. SIMPal offers a range of plans including some with calls and SMS. Check plan details before purchasing.

Can I get a refund if my eSIM doesn't work?

Yes. If activation fails through no fault of your own, contact SIMPal support in-app. We'll troubleshoot and issue a replacement or refund as appropriate.

Can I keep my existing number?

Yes. With Dual SIM, your physical SIM (and existing number) stays active for calls and texts while the SIMPal eSIM handles your data.
